PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- While famed Spanish artist, Francisco
Jose de Goya y Lucientes is sometimes referred to as the
"first modernist" curators of a new exhibition in
Philadelphia want people to know the full breadth and
complexity to his life's work.
To that end, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Musee des
Beaux-Arts in Lille, Francel have organized the exhibition,
"Goya: Another Look," to re-examine Goya through some 35
important paintings and a group of
works on paper.
The exhibition, opening April 11, will focus on major examples from the artist's tapestry designs, religious subjects, still lifes, genre
subjects and portraits.
During Goya's lifetime (1746-1828) he was renowned as a
painter without rival in Spain, and successive generations of
artists found meaning in Goya's work, including the French
painters of the mid-19th century. That legacy continued with 20th-century artists, particularly Picasso.
"Goya: Another Look" will run from April 11 to July 1, 1999 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, (215) 684-7860,
