(CNN) -- The U.S. State Department has issued a public announcement advising travelers of the potential for disruptions in transportation and other services in other countries due to Y2K problems. Y2K refers to the potential for some computer systems to malfunction on January 1, 2000 because of the once-common practice of using only two digits for recording the year in computer programs.

In countries that are not prepared to deal with the problem, vital services including transportation and financial services (such as ATMs) could be affected, according to the State Department. Americans planning to travel abroad in late 1999 or early 2000 are advised to be aware of the potential for problems and to stay informed about Y2K readiness in the countries where they are traveling. The State Department says that by October 1, 1999, its Consular Information Sheets will include such information as available.
