NEW HAMPSHIRE (CNN) -- Travelers from all over the world are coming to New England to see the forests turn into an autumn patchwork of reds, golds and greens. This visual glory is a relatively recent phenomenon. The earliest inhabitants of this region would have found mostly evergreen forests. The spectacle that is today's autumn evolved after the Industrial Revolution, when great stands of pine were cut down to make boxes and mostly replaced with the maples and spruce that turn technicolor every year.
