(CNN) -- The U.S. Department of State issued a warning Friday against all travel to Albania and has ordered the departure of all non-emergency personnel and the families of employees from its embassy in Tirana.
The embassy could be targeted for a terrorist attack, given recent declarations against the United States and its citizens by Islamic extremists and press reports alleging U.S. participation in the recent apprehension of several Islamic extremists, the State Department said.
The State Department said the embassy will be able to provide only emergency citizens services and is urging American citizens currently in Albania to carefully consider their personal security and to leave the country if appropriate.
Warnings against travel to Kenya and Tanzania have been lifted. However, the State Department said U.S. citizens should exercise caution while traveling in both countries because of the August 7 embassy bombings.
