WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Department of State is cautioning U.S. citizens
against travel to the Serbian province of Kosovo "because of the potential for
rapid changes in the security situation there."
The public announcement issued Tuesday cites "ongoing ethnic tensions between Serbs and ethnic Albanians" which have flared up in recent months. The department said "police checkpoints are numerous throughout Kosovo and the Yugoslav Army is increasingly visible outside garrisons. Armed ethnic Albanian extremists are also increasingly visible and have set temporary roadblocks at some points. Large demonstrations by both Serbs and ethnic Albanians continue in the major Kosovo towns on a daily basis."
