WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Department of State on Tuesday issued an announcement advising the country's citizens to defer "non-essential travel" to the North Sumatran town Medan in Indonesia due to "serious rioting, looting and destruction of property" occurring in the area early this month. The announcement is in addition to an announcement regarding the severity of air pollution in Indonesia, issued April 13 and expiring May 12. The new announcement expires August 6, 1998.
The department also urged U.S. citizens traveling in Paraguay to "avoid large gatherings and political rallies before, during and after" presidential elections on Sunday, May 10. That announcement expires on May 17.
