LAS VEGAS (CNN) -- The lights are bright every night, not just New Year's Eve, in Las Vegas -- and if you're looking for a sure bet for 1998, the desert city is a capital of holiday cheer for bargain-hunting travelers once the holiday celebrations are over.
"It's a very, very slow time of year in Las Vegas," says Bob Sehlinger, author of "The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas. "And consequently you can get some astounding deals on rooms. I have seen, in the time that we've covered Las Vegas, everything from free rooms ... to rooms that went for
under $20."
With more than 104,000 rooms, Las Vegas boasts more rooms than any destination in the world. In the past two years, the city has welcomed three new mega-resorts, and several older properties -- like Caesar's Palace -- have added hundreds of rooms.
The new resorts are tourist attractions in their own right. New York New York comes complete with Lady Liberty, Greenwich Village, the Manhattan skyline and the New York "Slot" Exchange. There's even a Coney Island-styled roller coaster -- the Manhattan Express -- for those seeking a different kind of a spin on a Vegas vacation.
The Stratosphere offers reasonably priced rooms along with some of the finest dining in Las Vegas, but it's better known for its view.
"This is the tallest free-standing observation tower in the United States," says Stratosphere executive vice president Andrew Blumen. "It's the tallest building west of the Mississippi."
If European elegance is more your style, pay a visit to the Monte Carlo. This new resort boasts its own brewpub, and is home to master magician Lance Burton.
No matter what your passion, you're sure to find plenty of action as Las Vegas welcomes the New Year.
