MANAGUA, Nicaragua (CNN) -- Managua's 112th annual festival celebrating its patron saint took place over the weekend, with thousands of Managuans paying homage to Saint Domingo de Guzman. While the city's elite marked the occasion with special dances and shows attended by Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman, the rest of Managua celebrated with a rowdy street festival.

In a century-old tradition called "Chinegros," Managuans covered with a black substance escorted a 25-centimeter (just under 10-inch) statue of the saint through the streets to the Church of Las Sierrita. The statue's escorts gave thanks to the saint, who they believe answered their prayers.
