Walking Mississippi's halls of history
(CNN) -- Only in the South -- which preserves its genteel heritage with the same delicate reverence afforded fine family china -- could a home tour lovingly be tagged a trek of religious devotion.
The 55th annual Spring Pilgrimage to Antebellum Homes begins Thursday in Columbus, Mississippi. The 10-day event recreates the pre-Civil War era with tour guides dressed in period costumes, and 11 meticulously-maintained houses.
"It's all antiques in the homes," says Carolyn Denton, the director of the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Only the kitchens give it away."
The Pilgrimage includes daily tours, two candlelight tours, and more fluted white columns than you can shake an Ionic temple at.
