(CNN) -- Saturday marks International Women's Day, in honor of women and their contributions to the workplace. The event is said to commemorate a demonstration of female textile workers in New York City in 1857. Celebrated throughout the world, the day is a national holiday in Russia and China, where women are presented flowers and gifts at their workplaces. The holiday is believed to have been proclaimed by an international conference for women in Helsinki, Finland, in 1910.
