(CNN) -- Ghana turns 40 on Thursday. The West African nation received its independence in 1957 after more than 100 years of British rule. It dropped its anglo moniker "the Gold Coast" and adopted the name of an ancient African empire along the Niger River.
Ghana marks the holiday with celebrations nationwide.
