(CNN) -- Monterey, California is proving yet again that one person's fish bait is another person's delicacy. The central California town which claims to be "the calamari capital of the world" is hosting its 14th annual Great Monterey Squid Festival this weekend.

About 30,000 marine mollusk-lovers are expected to attend the event at the Monterey Fairgrounds. For two days, they will indulge in every conceivable preparation of what organizers call "the incredible, edible, elegant squid" -- a foodstuff that clearly has one up on eggs, if nothing else.

Local fishermen will be on hand to show visitors how to clean and prepare squid for cooking. Chefs will take it from there, with demonstrations on how to cook this really "other" white meat.

For visitors looking for diversions with a little more backbone, live vertebrates (in the form of musicians) will be performing oldies rock'n'roll and country western tunes on four stages. Arts and crafts and educational exhibits round out the festival.

A one-day pass is $7 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-12. For more information, call (408) 649-6544 or e-mail to 76543.1635@compuserve.com.
