(CNN) -- In the United States, Sunday is Mom's day. In Jamaica, it's Bob's.

Jamaica honors reggae legend Bob Marley every year on May 11, the anniversary of his death, which is officially proclaimed Bob Marley Day. The musician died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36 in Miami, Florida.

Marley was buried in a mausoleum in his native Jamaica. A month before his death, the government awarded him Jamaica's Order of Merit, the nations' third highest honor, in recognition of his cultural contributions.

Marley and his band the Wailers almost single-handedly internationalized reggae music. They also promoted the rastafarian movement, a religious and political drive led by admirers of late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, formerly known as Ras Tafari.
