If you go....Getting to and staying on Cumberland Island are no small feats -- the trip requires planning and, if you intend to stay overnight, reservations. Read on for details, phone numbers, weather links and related CNN stories. Camping on CumberlandThere are four backcountry campsites where there are no toilet facilities. Wells near these sites provide water but it should be boiled or treated chemically before consumed. Campfires are not permitted at the backcountry sites. At Sea Camp, fires are permitted and there is a refuse bin -- only for perishable items -- near the restrooms and showers. It is cleverly locked so the racoons and armadillos cannot get to it. The restrooms and showers are more than adequate: the showers are ample and offer an open-air skylight, and the restrooms are spacious. A tub adjacent to the showers gives you a place to wash pots and pans should you desire to cook during your stay. Note: If you intend to camp, you need to make reservations. Call (912) 882-4335 Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can fax a reservation anytime at (912) 673-7747. Food and ProvisionsThere is nothing approaching a convenience store on the island so you must pack what you need, whether you are at a backcountry site or at Sea Camp. Any refuse from your stay must come back with you so you should plan accordingly. I recommend bringing your own food and utensils because the campsites at Sea Camp are well-outfitted with a large fire pit and a raised grill. One night we had a large fire going in the pit where we cooked bundles of potatoes and vegetables in aluminum foil to go over some pasta we had also prepared. We grilled eggplant with olive oil and parmesan cheese on the raised grill to add to the feast. Getting to CumberlandReservations for the ferry are not required, but since only 300 people a day are transported to the island, you're better off planning ahead. You cannot take pets, bicycles, or cars. For ferry reservations, call (912) 882-4335. Related Resources:
