Lincoln Memorial
Completed in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial contains a 19-foot-high (6-meter) by 19-foot-wide seated statue of slain President Abraham Lincoln. The statue was constructed with 28 separate blocks of white Georgia marble.
Thirty-six columns ring the memorial representing the number of states in the union at the time of Lincoln's assassination. The names of the 48 states existing at the time of the memorial's completion are carved in the exterior attic above the columns. Alaska and Hawaii are acknowledged by a memorial plaque inside the plaza.
