Holocaust Museum
Just 400 yards (364 meters) from the Washington Monument, the Holocaust Museum opened its doors in April 1993. As a memorial to the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, the museum's mission is to educate and advance knowledge of the tragedy, to preserve the memory of those who suffered and to encourage visitors to reflect upon the moral and spiritual questions raised by the events. The 36,000-square-foot (3,240-square-meter) structure houses a permanent exhibition containing artifacts, film clips, photographs and other documents that detail the events surrounding the Holocaust, as well as a learning center, research institute, Hall of Remembrance, library and special exhibition galleries.
