Arts and Industries Building

This second Institution endeavor opened on the Mall -- in 1881 -- was built specifically to exhibit the materials from the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. First home to many exhibits now found in other Smithsonian museums, the Arts and Industries Building today features changing exhibitions and administrative offices, as well as the Baldwin locomotive and many 19th-century tools and machinery.
