National Museum of American History
This 750,000-square-foot (67,500-square-meter) museum opened its doors in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology. In 1980, the name was changed to the National Museum of American History to better reflect the purpose and contents of the museum. The artifacts inside include the flag that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner," Morse's telegraph, Bell's original experimental telephones, the Foucault pendulum and the First Ladies' gowns. Two "Hands On" centers allow visitors to experiment with inventions such as the cotton gin, play games and participate in other virtual learning exhibitions.
