The focus of Portland's lively, livable downtown is Pioneer Courthouse
Square, an open yet warm public space paved with bricks the color of terra cotta. It's no wonder they call it "Portland's living room." Nordstrom's department store looms over the square opposite the bronze sculpture "Running Horses" by Tom Hardy. Sculptor Georgia Gerber added realistic bronze deer, ducks, bears and seals in and around pools at the square (Morrison and Yamhill streets, between Southwest 5th and 6th avenues. And Portland remembers its past with a wrought-iron gate and fence from the Portland Hotel, which once stood on the site.
