Going to Baja:
Even by the seat of your pants, a Baja trip requires some leg-work

A trip to Baja requires much more preparation than a camping trip to the local state park. If you are camping the whole way, you will need to bring the standard camping equipment (a good, warm sleeping bag, a tent, etc.). On top of the usual list, antacid and anti-diarrheal medicine are very important.

Water is the most important item and should be your first priority. The desert is hot and you will find yourself dehydrated frequently. Some people can handle drinking the Mexican water but if you want to play it safe, bring as much water as you think you need plus a little more. In larger towns, purified water is readily available, but be sure to always have plenty on hand for the long stretches of road between towns. The Surf Report (a publication of Surfer Magazine) recommends 2 gallons (7.6 liters) of water per person per day.

As far as reference materials go, AAA provides good supply lists and up-to-date road maps. A good road map is essential if you plan to travel off Mex. 1 anywhere in Baja. Call AAA at (800) 222-4357. The Surf Report divides its Baja editions into Baja Norte and Baja Sur. It's an excellent source of information about surf spots, but also provides detailed information about places to camp and fish. Order by calling (714) 496-5922. Lonely Planet publishes a Baja guide book that is available at most retail bookstores.
