A.D. Williams' nine-room home on Auburn Avenue has been restored and is now one of the cornerstones of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Park rangers lead tours of the home, also part of the Freedom Walk, an interpretive trail through Sweet Auburn toward downtown Atlanta, a mile (2.5 kilometers) west.
Further down Auburn Avenue, the current national offices of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference -- formed in 1957 by King and others -- are housed in the old Prince Hall Masonic Building. And just beyond a swath of interstate highway that wasn't there in the civil rights leader's early days is the Sweet Auburn Curb Market on Edgewood Avenue. The market, notable at its 1923 opening for serving both blacks and whites, still offers fresh produce and meats.
