A zig-zagging Alpine road leads from Brasov back to the resort town Poiana Brasov, a getaway for skiers in winter and hikers and picnickers in summer. Artisans sell their wares in front of hotels and restaurants.

"We weave our cloths on the loom by hand," says one merchant. "And we sew it with silk thread, synthetic thread, with all kinds of materials. We do everything by hand."
