Information:

Most of the residential displays turn on the lights no earlier than Thanksgiving each year, and keep the display up until New Year's. Times vary, generally from dusk until 10 or 11 p.m. If you're in the area, directions to those sites are available on their Web pages.

For the more official light displays, here's some information:

  • In Newton, Texas, Santa's Workshop is open on Courthouse Square 5-9 p.m. through Christmas Eve. Closed Christmas day. The train operates from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and costs $3 (children under 4 free). Through January 2, 1998.

  • Lake Lanier Island's Nights of Lights (7000 Holiday Road, Lake Lanier Islands, Georgia) run through December 31, 5-10 p.m. $25 per car; $35 per passenger van (10-19 passengers); $85 per tour bus (20 or more passengers). (770) 932-7200 or (800) 840-LAKE for more details.

  • Callaway Gardens' Fantasy in Lights, U.S. Highway 27, Pine Mountain, Georgia. Drive it yourself or take the trolley. Through December 28. Advance tickets only: $10 per adult, $8 ages 6-12 Friday and Saturday; $8 and $4 Sunday through Tuesday. 5 and under free. Call 1-800-CALLAWAY.

  • Stone Mountain Park's (Stone Mountain, Georgia) holiday lights will be lit through December 31; call for information (770) 498-5702. $6 per car.

  • Gatlinburg's Smoky Mountain Lights are on display in Tennesee ... for a long time. After New Year's, they become Smoky Mountain Romance, a Valentine's display with hearts and Cupid instead of candy canes and Santa. Free. (800) 568-4748.
