From his boyhood fascination with Hollywood glamour and early job as a department store window dresser to international artistic fame, Andy Warhol never strayed far from the world of fashion. "The Warhol Look" at the Whitney Museum of Art explores how style mingled with fine art and film throughout Warhol's career.
The collection of more than 500 works features Warhol's 1950s fashion illustrations (another early job) and later takeoffs on that experience, such as his 1980 painting of shoes. Along with images from film and photographs of people he mingled with on the New York nightclub scene (such as designers Halston and Jean-Paul Gaultier), the exhibit also touches on the works of dozens of other artists -- including Gianni Versace, whose "Liz" jacket was inspired by Warhol's paintings of Elizabeth Taylor.
The exhibit is scheduled to continue on a two-year international tour (Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Barbican Art Gallery, London and Musée de la Mode, Marseilles, France) before culminating at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
