artists among us
Master artists need not hail from centuries past. In fact, some of the greatest of the 20th century have proven their worth not by copying the past, but by shattering its rules.
Though from profoundly different backgrounds and times, Keith Haring (who got his start as a graffiti artist) and Pablo Picasso (who got his as a child prodigy) have both contributed to defining new directions in art. They deconstructed and simplified, used bold shapes and colors and, on the whole, unabashedly followed their own muses.
And, for the time being, the artists have something else in common: Each is the subject of a wide-ranging, touring exhibition. For many people, it is the first glimpse of so many of Haring's or Picasso's works in person and in context.
