My dad was and still is a racing fan. Every Sunday afternoon from February to November, the radio at our house (and later the television, when racing became a little more popular) was tuned to the races. Names of drivers are like uncles or distant cousins to me -- Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Fred Lorenzen, Cale Yarborough, Junior Johnson, David Pearson, Richard Petty. I heard their exploits every week, drew pictures of their cars, colored 'em carefully and cut 'em out for my dad to see. Then I'd have races of my own on an imaginary track on my bedroom floor.
