On the banks of the Mighty Mississippi rises a city named for an ancient Egyptian capital on the Nile -- Memphis, Tennessee. James Winchester, one of three landowners who thought building a town on the long-occupied and oft-contested river bluffs would increase property value, chose the name as a majestic allusion.
But since its founding in the early 19th century, Memphis has established itself as a capital in its own right -- an epicenter of the Civil Rights movement, the Home of the Blues, the Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll, and a mecca of barbecue.
Memphis' broad claims to fame are as vibrant as ever -- with continuing renovations downtown, a lively music scene and the enduring appeal of one man who chose to settle there: Elvis Presley.
