There's always something
to do with Elvis
Elvis is everywhere, as the song goes, but there is more of him in Memphis than anywhere -- especially August 9-17, a.k.a. "Elvis Week '97." Hordes of the faithful are expected to converge on the city to pay their respects 20 years after Elvis' death, and a sublime assortment of events -- from the reverent to the raucous -- are scheduled to keep them in mind of the King. Here are some of the highlights (ticketing information available through Graceland at (800) 238-2000):
Elvis Riverboat Cruise and Dance Party
August 10, 11, 12 (7 p.m.-11 p.m.)
Cruise in regal style on the Memphis Queen Line, with music à la King provided by the Andy Childs Band. Tickets are $20/person -- if you can get 'em.
Dedication of Elvis Statue
August 12 (10:30 a.m.)
Elvis will stand immortal, appropriately, in front of the new Elvis Presley restaurant and nightclub at 126 Beale Street -- close enough to smell the pan-fried pork chops. The new statue replaces one that has been restored and relocated.
International Elvis Dance Party
August 14 (7 p.m. - midnight)
Wedge yourself into your blue suede shoes and head to the Agricenter International at 7777 Walnut Grove Road, where musicians from around the world will perform Elvis classics. Admission is $20.
Annual Candlelight Vigil
August 15 (9 p.m.)
Graceland remains open until dawn, allowing candle-carrying fans to walk single-file from the driveway to Elvis' gravesite in the Meditation Garden. No admission charge.
Elvis in Concert '97
August 16 (7 p.m.)
With a little help from video technology, the Mid-South Coliseum is putting Elvis himself at center stage for a concert spectacular. The Memphis Symphony Orchestra and an historic reunion of original Elvis bandmates will back the archive lead vocals of the King. Tickets range from $50 to $80, available through Ticketmaster at (901) 525-1515.
Elvis Art Contest & Exhibit
August 9-17
You can bet on a velvet Elvis or two -- and a whole lot more -- at the Elvis Art Contest & Exhibit at Graceland Plaza. Amateur and professional artists from all over the world have entered Elvis-themed artwork for exhibition and competition. No admission charge.
