Shakin' Shrines

Elvis has certainly drawn his share of adulation, and there are spots aplenty for the devotee to pay homage to the King.

Star Bar

Infodata's Customer Support Department in Fairfax, Virginia, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Atlanta's Star Community Bar all boast small rooms filled with Elvis memorabilia. The shrines of Infodata and MIT take their visitors via the Internet. The one at the Star Bar, which was once a bank branch, lives in an old vault -- open, but behind glass, for all bar patrons to see. The sounds of the heavy vault door closing on all that money have been exchanged -- for an all-Elvis jukebox right outside the shrine.

In a pasture just south of Bozeman, Montana is the Plywood Elvis (he moves to the barn, presumably assisted, in inclement weather), created from an eight-foot sheet of plywood and featuring a Santa hat.

In a pasture just south of Bozeman, Montana is the Plywood Elvis (he moves to the barn, presumably assisted, in inclement weather), created from an eight-foot sheet of plywood and featuring a Santa hat. The "Plywood E" was born as a Yuletide decoration five years ago, according to Marla Goodman (who says she assisted at the "birth"), and a "Lighting of the Plywood Elvis" is held each year.

But last year, the Plywood E's guardians decided to share him with a wider audience, and he now has a spot on the Web as an oracle, dispensing sage advice to humble seekers.

And then there's the First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine, a New Jersey organization that ... well, carries on the spirit of Elvis in a most creative manner. The members of the church, which promotes making Elvis' birthday a national holiday, will be among the faithful in Memphis during Elvis Week.
