The Mansion
As we get nearer, you see: Graceland doesn't look so much like a mansion, but rather like a very nice house. The main building, erected in 1939, was being used by the Christian Graceland Church when Elvis bought it in 1957. Being a good Southern man, then 22-year-old Presley acquired the house for himself, his parents and his paternal grandmother to live in. He conducted extensive renovations, adding on the Jungle Room and Trophy Building (you'll see them) as well as a swimming pool, racquetball court and other structures. Graceland, incidentally, had its name long before Elvis signed the dotted line. The original building, an 1860s farmhouse, was owned by Memphis Daily Appeal publisher S.E. Toof, who named it after his daughter, Grace.
