Indian Jewelry

Things to do in Santa Fe:

  • Settle on a park bench on the Plaza and people-watch.

  • Shop for Native American crafts and jewelry -- many vendors sell their wares around the Plaza.

  • Stroll along Canyon Road and visit the many galleries.

  • Sample some of Santa Fe's more than 200 restaurants. For Southwestern fare, try Coyote Café, Café Pasqual's, and the Blue Corn Café.

  • Visit the Loretto Chapel (now a private museum) and draw your own conclusions about its "miraculous" winding staircase said to have been built by a mysterious stranger without nails or support beams.

  • Soak up the soothing waters of Ten Thousand Waves, a Japanese-style hot tub/spa club with public and private areas.

  • In the summer, pack a picnic dinner and head to the Santa Fe opera for a night of music under the stars.

  • In the winter, bring your skis and hit the Santa Fe ski basin.

  • See the "Oldest House" -- claimed to be the oldest house in the United States.

  • Try your hand at Southwestern cuisine -- take a cooking class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking.

    In the area:

  • Take a day trip north to Taos (about 50 miles from Santa Fe) and visit the spectacular Taos Pueblo, continuously inhabited for 1,000 years. The grave of author D.H. Lawrence, a contemporary of O'Keeffe, is about 15 miles north of town.

  • Visit San Ildefonso Pueblo and see the museum's collection of the black-on-black pottery Maria Martinez made famous in the early 1900s.

  • See Anasazi cave and cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument (about 45 miles west of Santa Fe).

  • Drive up to Chimayo, a small town about 30 miles north of Santa Fe known for its traditional weaving and a sanctuary called the "Lourdes of the Southwest" for its faith healing reputation.
