Where to stay
Edisto's climate is temperate year-round, but most tourists come in the spring and summer -- from Easter through Labor Day. In the summer, 8,000 to 10,000 vacationers (roughly four times the island's population) visit Edisto Beach in any given week. Rentals are available for private beach homes or condos overlooking the island's golf course resort, Fairfield Ocean Ridge. Rental agencies suggest making reservations for rental homes at least six months to a year in advance for summer stays.
Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can pitch a tent on one of the oceanside campsites at Edisto Beach State Park. The 1,255-acre park includes a dense live oak forest, a sprawling salt marsh and a mile-and-a-half of beach where families can poke around for shells and shark teeth. The park is open every day of the year.
