On Borneo's extreme northern tip, about a half-dozen lodges have been built along the Kinabatangan River to accommodate the growing number of visitors.
Many of the lodges emphasize environmental sensitivity. The Sukau Lodge, for instance, runs largely on solar power, and last year, the owners donated 1,000 free overnight stays for volunteers working on environmental projects.
Despite being off the beaten path -- a two-hour drive and a boat ride from the airport -- the lodges offer gourmet meals.
