Lincoln Park: Chicago Historical Society
The Chicago Historical Society at 1601 N. Clark St. is a good place to begin your tour. That's north of downtown and south of the Lincoln Park neighborhood, inside Lincoln Park itself.
An exhibit about Chicago's national political conventions is on display until May 18. Another exhibit called "Altered States," looks at the use of alcohol and other drugs in America from the 1600s to the present. That exhibit runs through September.
Lincoln Park: The Zoo
While you're in the park, check out the Lincoln Park Zoo. African lions and nearly-extinct Mexican wolves are highlights. Admission is free.
Chicagoans take their buildings seriously. This is evident even inside the zoo, where Cafe Brauer sits serenely on the banks of the South Pond. It is a national landmark and an outstanding example of Prairie-style architecture, which Frank Lloyd Wright made famous.
Compared with its structural splendor, Cafe Brauer's food is ordinary. An old-fashioned ice cream parlor next door is a better choice on a hot summer day.
