SHOWBIZ TONIGHT

Tom Cruise Proposes to Katie Holmes; Angelina Jolie`s Personal Life Full of Drama; Picks and Pans of New Movies

Aired June 17, 2005 - 19:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KARYN BRYANT, CO-HOST: What it`s like to be a Victoria`s Secret supermodel.
A.J. HAMMER, CO-HOST: And, should you head to the bat-cave this weekend? I`m A.J. Hammer.

BRYANT: And I`m Karyn Bryant, this is SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER (voice-over): Tom pops the question. Katie Holmes is now a bride-to-be.

KATIE HOLMES, ACTRESS: I`m so happy.

HAMMER: Tonight, the details of their whirlwind courtship. And the engagement that`s towering over Hollywood.

BRYANT (voice-over): Angelina Jolie, up close and personal. Actress, activist, major-league movie star. Tonight, the side of Angelina you`ve never seen.

HAMMER: It`s one hot summer for rock concerts. Huge acts are hitting the road, but just try scoring tickets. Tonight, why so many fans are being left out in the cold.

VANESSA CARLTON, MUSICIAN: Hi, I`m Vanessa Carlton. And if it happened today, it`s on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(END VIDEOTAPE))

BRYANT: Hello, I`m Karyn Bryant. This is SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, and you`re at the top of the show.

HAMMER: I`m A.J. Hammer. You are watching TV`s only live nightly entertainment news program.

BRYANT: Well, it seemed inevitable, and yes, it finally happened. Tonight, Tom and Katie are engaged.

HAMMER: Tom Cruise says he popped the question to Katie Holmes last night in Paris.

BRYANT: This has everybody asking, of course, is it for real?

HAMMER: Will the engagement snuff out the skepticism, or fan the flames? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, of course, all over this. David Haffenreffer is here with more.

DAVID HAFFENREFFER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Another made for TV moment, guys. And there was no air pumping this time but plenty of big, toothy smiles from Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes as they announced, moments after it happened and in a roomful of international reporters, that they`re going to tie the knot.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (singing): Suddenly you`re in love.

HAFFENREFFER (voice-over): After a whirlwind courtship, Tom and Katie are tying the knot.

HOLMES: I`m so happy.

HAFFENREFFER: Tom popped the question at the Eiffel tower yesterday. No doubt about it, l`amour is in the air.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Was that the most fun in Paris that you`ve ever had?

TOM CRUISE, ACTOR: Yes. Without question, the most special time in Europe ever.

HAFFENREFFER: The love birds found themselves together in Paris at the same time while making publicity rounds for their latest movies, Katie for "Batman Begins" and Tom for "War of the Worlds."

CRUISE: The premier we wanted here in France, because it`s beautiful and it`s romantic. And yes, I proposed to Kate last night.

HAFFENREFFER: Katie`s got the ring to prove it.

Dating for about two months, the two have had a very intense and very public courtship, which all began in another romantic European city, Rome, back in April.

CRUISE: I don`t want to disappoint her.

HAFFENREFFER: And who can forget Tom Cruise`s unbridled exuberance on Oprah, which raised more than a few eyebrows?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (singing): Is this love that I`m feeling?

HAFFENREFFER: The air pumping has become a symbol of sorts. Lindsay Lohan calls it "pulling a Tom." But some fans are just a little skeptical, not buying Tom`s amorous displays.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It seems like he`s done this with Mimi Rogers and with Nicole Kidman. He takes somebody who`s young and gets them off to a wonderful start and sets them on their way. And why he does it, I don`t know. But I don`t know if I`m buying it either.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Both of their movies is coming out. Tom Cruise got a movie coming out. Katie Holmes got a movie coming out. And Katie Holmes is not that big. Now she`s big, because she`s engaged to Tom Cruise? Yes, but I think it`s all a publicity stunt.

JEFF CAGLE, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: I think you have to be pretty skeptical to believe that Tom and Katie truly are doing this just to promote "War of the Worlds" and "Batman Begins."

But I do think the -- that the skepticism is sort of understandable from a larger cultural standpoint. And also we`re just not used to seeing Tom Cruise behave this way.

HAFFENREFFER: But for a high profile actor, managing the media and playing to them is part of the deal. For example, Paramount Pictures, the company that produced Tom`s latest movie, provided much of the video you see here.

CAGLE: I think that he is now behaving in a way that we`ve never seen him behave before. So audiences don`t quite know what to do with him. At the same time, I don`t think it`s going to matter a hill of beans as far as the grosses of "War of the Worlds."

HAFFENREFFER: Publicity stunt or not, wedding bells are in their future.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HAFFENREFFER: Now, no wedding date has been set for the happy loving couple. Tom`s movie, "War of the Worlds," opens on June 29. And Katie`s "Batman Begins" is in a theater near you -- A.J.

HAMMER: All right, David Haffenreffer thank you very much.

Well, whether the Tom/Katie affair is true love or a true publicity stunt, the careers of a movie superstar and a young up and coming star are at stake here. So are Tom and Katie`s public displays of affection doing them more harm than good and more harm than good to their careers and their summer movies?

Well, let`s get some answers from somebody who would know, celebrity publicist Jonathan Cheban of Grubman Cheban P.R., who joins us live from New York City.

All right, Jonathan. The word "skepticism" was mentioned at least 10 times in the last five minutes talking about this. And since this relationship was first announced, people went into it skeptical.

He now asks Katie to marry her -- marry him right before the weekend that her movie is going into its big release. How can we but be skeptical, and why wouldn`t they put off this engagement if they didn`t want to fan those flames?

JONATHAN CHEBAN, CELEBRITY PUBLICIST: Well, this is their big weekend for doing this. They`ve been -- if they did it for a publicity stunt, it`s really more for her. He kind of needs this sometimes but not really. Katie needed this for the big weekend. And we`ll see on Monday if it paid off. If not we`re going to see if the engagement is going to be called off.

HAMMER: And what do you think are the chances of a backlash here?

CHEBAN: There`s a big chance of a backlash. Basically, Middle America, that was never aware of these kind of publicity stunts, because Tom is so out of character and basically kind of making such a big deal about this, which he usually doesn`t, it`s getting their attention.

And they`re thinking to themselves, "Is this a publicity stunt?" And something that they`ve never thought about before. And they`re going to be very skeptical.

HAMMER: OK. So you just said middle America, not aware of these publicity stunts. I`ve heard throughout the latter part of my life that this actually does go on, that publicists will hook up various superstars to -- you know, for the benefit and betterment of their careers. Are you saying that these do actually happen?

CHEBAN: These definitely happen in Hollywood. I mean, this time it`s very, very public. I mean, they could be in love, but most likely this is a huge, huge publicity stunt. And we`ll see what happens after "War of the Worlds" comes out.

Tom really doesn`t need the publicity for this movie. He`s got Steven Spielberg. He`s the biggest actor in the world, and he`s already going to break box office records with this movie. So this -- Katie -- this is for Katie.

HAMMER: All right. Well, what kind of advice would you give to Tom if you were guiding him, on how to manage this situation assuming it`s a real deal?

CHEBAN: Basically, I would stay away from Katie for the next week. You know, he really needs to have some Tom time. This Tom and Katie could really affect him a little bit, and he definitely needs a break from her. They got engaged. They`ve been together all week. We haven`t seen them separate except for a day at a time. And people really need to see them separated.

HAMMER: OK. So we got it straight from you. These things really do go on. Jonathan Cheban, thank you very much for joining us here on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

And now we would like to hear from you. It is our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day to round out the week: Tom and Katie, is it for real? You can vote by going to CNN.com/ShowbizTonight. Want to tell us more? You can by e-mailing us. ShowbizTonight@CNN.com is our e-mail address. We`re going to run down some of what you had to say later on in the show.

BRYANT: Michael Jackson`s family is planning a big thank-you party for fans who supported him during the trial. The Jackson family will host an invitation-only party for the fans this weekend at a casino near Neverland. There is no word on whether Jackson himself will show up at the party.

HAMMER: Well, there`s a spiritual movement sweeping through Hollywood: Kabbalah. It is the study of ancient Jewish spiritual teachings. And it`s got some pretty well-known students.

Tonight ABC`s Elizabeth Vargas takes a look.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ELIZABETH VARGAS, ABC NEWS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Most people don`t have a clue what ka Kabbalah is, only that it has something to do with Madonna and a parade of stars wearing red strings. From Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher to Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, Kabbalah has become part of pop culture.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: And hear more about Kabbalah and why stars are signing up tonight on ABC`s "20/20."

BRYANT: Angelina Jolie, up close and personal, that`s coming up next.

HAMMER: Plus, from nun-in-training to a Victoria`s Secret angel. What it`s like to be Adriana Lima. That`s coming up.

BRYANT: And "Batman Begins," begins. Will it have a happy ending? We`ll find out, coming up in "People Magazine`s Picks and Pans."

HAMMER: It`s time now for tonight`s "Entertainment Weekly Great American Pop Culture Quiz." Which Tom Cruise role did Tom Hanks turn down? "Jerry Maguire," "Days of Thunder," "Interview with the Vampire" or "A Few Good Men"? Stick around, because we are coming straight back with the answer on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. Once again, tonight`s "Entertainment Weekly Great American Pop Culture Quiz." Which Tom Cruise role did Tom Hanks turn down? "Jerry Maguire," "Days of Thunder," "Interview with the Vampire" or "A Few Good Men"? The answer, A, "Jerry Maguire."

BRYANT: Well, before she had to spend time battling the "are-they-or- aren`t they" rumors, Angelina Jolie dealt with a whole lot more. She adopted a son. She severed ties with her father, actor Jon Voight. And she split from her actor-husband, Billy Bob Thornton.

Her life story so far is quite a story. And here with more of it, CNN`s Paula Zahn for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

PAULA ZAHN, HOST, "PAULA ZAHN NOW" (voice-over): Two thousand one was a high point for Angelina Jolie. Her film "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" was a box office hit, and she had rekindled her relationship with her father, Jon Voight.

Jolie was also about to discover a passion for helping others.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I know nothing about what was in the box, the equipment.

ANGELINA JOLIE, ACTRESS/ACTIVIST: Did you know about the guns?

ZAHN: While researching her role in the film "Beyond Borders," Angelina Jolie traveled to Africa and Asia as part of a United Nations refugee mission.

JOLIE: They didn`t dumb it down for an actress. They said, you know, "We did have bets how much luggage you`d have, you know, and would you be wearing high heels." And they did sit around and wonder what was this strange creature that was coming into the middle of a place that seemed not to fit at all?

ZAHN: Jolie was such a perfect fit that in August 2001, she became a good will ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency.

JOLIE: And I`m so proud to represent them, and it means a lot to do it right.

ZAHN: In public, Jolie appeared to be the perfect diplomat. But her father says he was concerned about her private life.

JON VOIGHT, FATHER: You see the way she talks about her sex life and the way she`s gone from one marriage to another, which has been very painful to me to watch.

ZAHN: Voight says he tried to talk with Jolie about her promiscuous lifestyle.

VOIGHT: As soon as she saw the conversation going in a certain direction, she would push it side. So the only way to reach her was to get her a letter that she would read, somehow fix the circumstance so she`d read it. And the essence of the letter was that I was in pain that she was exhibiting these traits and setting such an example for young people.

ZAHN: Angelina told "Vanity Fair" she found the letter hurtful and stopped talking with her father.

Then, in March 2002, just after adopting her son from a Cambodian orphanage, Voight and Jolie`s private problems became very public.

TODD GOLD, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: The adoption was done, you know, in pretty extreme secrecy. And he, without her permission, basically told the world the news that she had become a mother. He did it in the most public of ways, in front of the press at the Academy Awards time.

VOIGHT: I had heard that she -- the baby was delivered to her. And I just was in the middle of a lot of attention, because I was up for an Academy Award. And they asked me about, "How`s Angie?"

And I said, "Well, she just got the baby today. So I guess that makes me a grandfather." I mean, you know, I was happy for her.

JOLIE: Hello. Hello.

ZAHN: When Jolie didn`t respond, Voight tried to reach her by appearing on "Access Hollywood" and "Inside Edition."

GOLD: He went in front of the press and said that she was suffering from psychological problems and was unfit, was unbalanced. And obviously, she was livid. If there was any chance of a relationship, it ended right there.

VOIGHT: When I was on "Access Hollywood," and obviously deeply emotionally distraught, she used that against me. She used everything. You know, she turned everything against me. She indicated that I was looking for publicity. Holy smokes.

ZAHN: Jolie would not talk to CNN about personal relationships. But she did release a statement: "I have no anger towards my father. I simply don`t know him. My son has never met him, and I`m doing my best at this to focus on a healthy life. I wish my father well."

In 2002, Jolie severed ties with Voight. That same year, her marriage to Billy Bob collapsed.

GOLD: Angelina has explained that the marriage ended because they simply grew apart.

ZAHN: Jolie has moved on and spends her days as a mom and working with the U.N.

JOLIE: Understand how Philip thinks.

ZAHN: She takes film roles, like her recent turn in the epic drama "Alexander," in order to donate more money to charity. And has met with refugees in more than 15 countries.

JOLIE: It`s these situations where you just look and you think for God`s sake we`ve got to figure some way to balance the world. There`s got to be something.

ZAHN: Jolie`s celebrity has brought a great deal of attention to the U.N. But it`s her love life, specifically rumors surrounding her and Brad Pitt, that continue to fascinate fans and make the cover of magazines.

CAGLE: The buzz started on the two of them pretty much the second "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" started filming. I think that whatever was happening between them, certainly word from the set got out that there was great chemistry between these two people.

ZAHN: Shooting began in January 2004. Four months later, there were tabloid stories of a romance between Pitt and Jolie. Brad and Angelina denied them.

GOLD: I don`t think Angelina lies. I don`t think that there was any kind of physical relationship while they were shooting the movie.

VOIGHT: Angie has seen her mother go through that kind of pain because of my adultery. So you would think she`d stay very far away from it. And she`s actually said she does. She says it. But does she?

ZAHN: In a recent interview with "Marie Claire" magazine, Jolie said, "To be intimate with a married man when my own father cheated on my mother is not something I could forgive. I could not, could not look at myself in the morning if I did that."

Just after New Year`s 2005, Brad and Jen called it quits. Only a few months later, Brad reportedly joined Angelina and her son on two African getaways.

GOLD: I think that can be seen as non-denial of a relationship that maybe has become a deepened friendship.

ZAHN: For her part, Jolie says she doesn`t pay much attention to reports about her.

JOLIE: People writing about me are saying things about my personal life. And you never want anything that says something nasty against your character, you know. You don`t like it. But I know who I am.

ZAHN: For the actress accustomed to doing things her own way, any future relationship with Dad, Jon Voight, or co-star Brad Pitt would be impossible to predict.

BRAD PITT, ACTOR: Dance with me.

ZAHN: So could "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" actually end up together off- screen?

CAGLE: Angelina and Brad actually make a nice pair. I mean, they look great together, obviously. And they are both interested in a lot of the same things. I mean, he has been traveling a lot. He has been educating himself about everything from stem-cell research to poverty in Ethiopia.

She is similarly passionate about certain social issues. So they are a good pair. They make a lot of sense.

ZAHN: Meanwhile, Angelina`s father is hoping for another reconciliation.

VOIGHT: Still, my concern is for my daughter. I`m still concerned for my daughter. You know. I want her happiness.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

BRYANT: That was CNN`s Paula Zahn for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. You can tune in to "PEOPLE IN THE NEWS" this weekend for a look at Morgan Freeman`s life off-screen in Mississippi. "PEOPLE IN THE NEWS" airs Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern on CNN. You can also pick up a copy of "People" magazine on newsstands now.

HAMMER: Well, Angelina`s ex is teaming up with her current co-star for a new movie. Today, "The Hollywood Reporter" says Jolie`s "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" co-star, Brad Pitt, will work with her ex-husband, Billy Bob Thornton, on an upcoming Warner Brothers film called "Peace Like a River." Thornton is set to star in the drama; Pitt will produce it.

BRYANT: So which celebrity would make the coolest dad? Well, in honor of Father`s Day, AOL asked kids age 6 to 12. And, it looks like Mr. Smith himself, Brad Pitt, was the winner. More than 60 percent consider him Daddy dearest.

Other father figures, in second is Ben Affleck. Britney Spears` husband, Kevin Federline, is in third. And "Lords of Dogtown" -- "Lords of Dogtown" star Heath Ledger came in fourth.

HAMMER: Holy movie review. We`re going to check out "Batman Begins." That`s coming up in "Picks and Pans."

BRYANT: Plus, U2 will play "With or Without You," but why is it so hard to score tickets to the summer`s hottest concerts? That is also coming up.

HAMMER: And, you`ve seen her on the red carpet, heard her on the radio. Now, Wendy Williams has something new up her sleeve. Wendy Williams joins us live in the "Showbiz Sitdown." That`s coming up.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Time for "The Showbiz Guide," where throughout the week we help you decide where to best spend your bucks on movies, music, DVDs and more. Tonight, "People" magazine`s "Picks and Pans," new movies, talking about "Batman Begins," "The Perfect Man," and "Howl`s Moving Castle." They`re all on the marquee, but which is worth your while?

Joining me here in New York City, "People" magazine movie critic Leah Rozen.

Happy weekend, nice to see you.

LEAH ROZEN, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: Same.

HAMMER: Let`s get right into it with "Batman Begins." Not expected to be the huge summer blockbuster that a movie like this normally might be.

ROZEN: Maybe that`s because it`s better than most summer blockbusters. This is a darn good "Batman" and I think puts the -- puts the franchise back flying high again.

This is directed by Christopher Nolan, who did "Memento." This is -- it`s really interesting. It`s the back story of Batman. They`re going back to how did he become Batman?

And you know, always sort of the origin myth of super heroes is really so much more interesting than when they`re just battling another hissing villain. So this is a smart way to try and revive the franchise.

HAMMER: And not a big action adventure movie, if that`s what people are looking for, from what I understand.

ROZEN: They come in with the action at the end. I mean, there`s plenty of action at the end when, you know, the evil villain shows up and the micro accelerator is almost set loose upon humanity or whatever.

HAMMER: OK. Let`s move on to "The Perfect Man." With this cast, Hillary Duff, Heather Locklear, and the film debut of Carson Kressley from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," it sounds to me like a hair color commercial.

ROZEN: Exactly. This is blonde on blonde on blonde. And you know, Carson Kressley has nothing when it comes to tossing locks next to Heather Locklear and Hillary Duff. I mean, those are two little blondes who know how to swing their hair to show their determination.

This is a silly film, you know. Silly premise, that the teenage daughter`s helping her mom find a date. But it doesn`t hurt anybody. It`s kind of cute. If you had a 10-year-old girl who`s a Hillary Duff fan, she will like it, and you will be vaguely amused, as well.

HAMMER: OK. Light and refreshing, perfect for summertime.

On to "Howl`s Moving Castle." Christian Bale, of course from "Batman Begins" also in this film.

ROZEN: Well, he does the voice. It`s an animated film. This is from the same Japanese master director who did "Spirited Away." Terrific cartoon. It`s like a fairy tale, transports you places it hasn`t been. "Howl`s Moving Castle" is a really good movie.

HAMMER: OK, great. Your critics pick, too. Thanks very much, Leah Rozen. Appreciate you stopping by.

And of course, for more picks and pans, you can just pick up a copy of the new "People" magazine, which is on news stands today.

BRYANT: Chasing Lindsay Lohan. The paparazzi are still in hot pursuit of the "Herbie: Fully Loaded" star. We`ll hear Lindsay`s theory on her recent close call coming up.

Plus, would you believe before Victoria`s Secret, Adriana Lima wanted to be a nun? More of Adriana`s secrets, coming up.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

SOPHIA CHOI, CNN HEADLINE NEWS ANCHOR, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT: Hi there I`m Sophia Choi and here`s your headline prime newsbreak.

A helicopter carrying eight people has crashed into Manhattan`s East river just blocks south of the United Nations. It`s the second time in four days a helicopter has gone into the East River. Authorities say both pilots and six businessmen were rescued.

MasterCard says it has detected a security breach that could put 40 million credit card holders of all brands at risk. The credit card giant says it has detected multiple instances of fraud that track back to a credit card processing center in Arizona. MasterCard says it`s notifying card issuing banks of that problem.

And Osama Bin Laden`s top lieutenant is urging Muslims now to press on with their jihad against the U.S and western interests. In a videotaped message, Asawari (ph) says peace and reform will not bring change to the Arab world and called on Palestinians to end their cease-fire with Israel.

That`s the news for now. I`m Sophia Choi. Now back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

BRYANT: Tonight, earning her wings, Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima. This "Victoria Secret" angel has got a heavenly secret, the career she almost walked into, before walking the catwalk.

HAMMER: And, tickets please, tickets! Super summer concerts, but where are the seats? Why fans are -- ticked off! That`s in the show`s biz.

MARIO VASQUEZ, CNN HEADLINE NEWS ANCHOR, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT: Hey guys my name is Mario Vasquez. If it happens today, it`s on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. For Friday, it`s 31 minutes past the hour, I`m A.J. Hammer.

BRYANT: I`m Karyn Bryant; here are tonight`s hot headlines.

HAMMER: Steve Wonder is paying the funeral expenses for five children who were killed in Philadelphia. The kids were victims of a house fire earlier this month. The singer`s publicist says Wonder will also try to visit the victims` family when he`s in town for the "Live 8" concert on July 2nd.

BRYANT: A Jackson jamboree. Michael Jackson`s family is planning a party tomorrow for the pop singer`s most-loyal fans. A spokesperson for the Chumash Casino in California says she doesn`t know who will be performing, but confirms that the event will be for invited guests only.

HAMMER: And, what everyone is talking about today -- Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are engaged. He popped the question in Paris at the Eiffel Tower last night. No date has been set ye. The couple went public with their relationship back in April. It will be the first marriage for Holmes, the third for Cruise.

BRYANT: Well there are certainly some skeptics out there. So we`re asking you, Tom and Katie, is it for real? That`s our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. You can keep voting at CNN.com/showbiztonight, you can also send your emails to us at SHOWBIZTONIGHT@cnn.com. We`ll share some of what you had to say at 54 past the hour.

HAMMER: Tonight, Lindsay Lohan says the paparazzi are still chasing after her, even after her recent close call on a California highway. You might remember that a photographer has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, for allegedly crashing into her car. Well on last night`s "Tonight Show," Lohan gave her theory on why the paparazzi are so aggressive.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LINDSAY LOHAN: It has gotten to a point now where it just gets so ridiculous. They kind of put you in a situation where they can get you to react a certain way and then they can get that first shot they think. I`m just thankful that no one was seriously injured.

JAY LENO, HOST, "THE TONIGHT SHOW:" I kind of know what you went through. Because one day I`m going down Burbank. And I see all these photographers parked and they are standing on a car on the roof near Burbank airport. I say, hi you guys. They say, Jay, how are you doing? I said what are you doing? They say we`re waiting for you. We`re waiting for Lindsay. And I said oh all right.

LOHAN: I remember that.

LENO: And I said, oh, I had her on my show recently." You did?" And they start chasing me. so I go, see ya. I`m going down the road and they`re coming after me. And I`m going why are they coming after me? I`m a 55-year- old guy, get away from me.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: We`re focusing on the paparazzi all next week, in our series "Inside the Paparazzi." The stories you didn`t know.

BRYANT: Tonight in the show`s biz, snagging summer concert tickets. This summer is shaping up to bring record amounts of money in ticket sales and there are some big name concerts. Acts like u2, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and Cold Plate are all touring the country. The only problem, it`s getting really hard to find tickets. And to tell us why from the claim Virginia, Lauren Ashburn, "USA Today`s" managing editor.

And Lauren first and foremost, why is it so hard to get a ticket to these tours? Because they`re certainly doing a lot of dates.

LAUREN ASHBURN, MANAGING EDITOR, "USA TODAY:" They certainly are. You know as Paul McCartney said or sang you can`t buy me love. Well concert fans aren`t feeling much love these days. They`re really discovering how difficult it is to buy good tickets to see their favorite artist. You know Paul McCartney as you said, U2, the Rolling Stones, they are among the hottest acts this summer.

And we wanted to see how hard it was to score good seats. And let me tell you it is so hard to buy a pair of tickets to concerts. Try Ticketmaster, phone, the Internet, and by the time you get to the actual person who`s going to sell you those seats, the best seats are long gone.

BRYANT: Well I know that they often have fan clubs who are entitled to presales; also American Express for example has presale options. Are the tickets just selling out that quickly to that elite people group of people?

ASHBURN: Well it`s not just that. You know we joined the Toby Keith fan club, for example, and we ended up with the worst seats in the house and a higher price than Ticketmaster. You know when we tried to buy tickets there. It`s not just that, it`s the scalpers; the marketers, the promoters, the tour sponsors and the fan club all get these seats ahead of the general public.

BRYANT: OK, so lets say they go to a big group of scalpers. Because I know that they have these measures that are supposedly there to discourage scalpers. Lets say the scalper gets them or Ticketmaster gets them. Then what? Because I know you often can find a ticket on eBay for a couple thousand dollars. I mean is that really where the tickets are ending up?

ASHBURN: A lot of them are. You know scalpers make $1.5 billion a year. This is a huge industry. We found one man who was working as a bank manager in New Jersey for $30,000. He`s a scalper out of his house. And he`s making $100,000 a year. You know, two front row Stones tickets actually in Boston went for on Ticketsnow.com for $7,400. People are actually paying these prices. On eBay, for example, two u2 tickets, take a guess. $4,200.

BRYANT: Wow. Who were the groups or the artists with the fastest sell-outs for the summer season?

ASHBURN: Well the rock-onomics of all of this is that it`s really the daddy dinosaur bands that are the a-list sellers and the ones selling out. And part of the reason has to do with baby boomers. Baby boomers are willing to spend thousands of dollars for tickets to see Paul McCartney or to see Bono or u2.

BRYANT: And make a weekend of it, maybe take a trip to another city and do that. So what is the solution then Lauren is there any help for the average Joe who just wants to get a ticket to see a band this summer?

ASHBURN: You know we even asked Jimmy Buffet that question. And he said he didn`t know the answer to that. And so he would probably give his pat answer which is, you know pour me something tall and strong. Because it`s just not going to happen for the average ticket holder.

BRYANT: All right, well I don`t know what we`re going to do. But hopefully a solution will arise. Thank you for joining us. "USA Today" Lauren Ashburn.

HAMMER: Adriana Lima, the Brazilian bombshell model who also happens to be a "Victoria`s Secret" angel. We caught up with her here in New York City to see what it`s like to be Adriana Lima.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ADRIANA LIMA, VICTORIA`S SECRET ANGEL: Today, I`m introducing the newest fragrance from Victoria`s Secret.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Please give a warm welcome to Adriana Lima.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I`m feeling sexy.

LIMA: I will be signing autographs, introducing the fragrance, giving love to everybody. I think my favorite part is interacting with fans.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She`s just so beautiful.

LIMA: I really love people. And I really appreciate that they come here to say hello to me.

DONALD MIKULA, HAIR STYLIST: I`ve worked at -- with most of the girls of VS and a lot of celebrities. And you know Adriana; she`s just a very unique person. She`s, what you see what is you get with Adriana.

LIMA: The first job that I did for Victoria Secret was a fashion show. And it was the biggest thing for my career. And I really was happy. I couldn`t believe at the time I was going to be next to Heidi Klum, Giselle. Oh my god. What an honor. I think for the catalog I get so concentrated. About the steps and the music and trying to feel what I wear. And I just want to be more than 100 percent. I`m a perfectionist.

CHARLIE GREEN, MAKEUP ARTIST: I`ve been with Adriana her whole career, actually. I met her when she first came to New York. Adriana has been very quiet, very serene, and hard working. Some people reading at work, they`re reading "US Weekly." Adriana has a little book from the bible. Like she reads -- it`s kind of sweet. It makes you feel guilty sometimes.

LIMA: I`m very religious. My strength and for my working, it`s my motto and my faith.

GREEN: She`s very strong on family, on religion. Did you know before Adriana became a model, she was at nun school?

MIKULA: Everybody looks at a super model and they say, oh my god, the salaries they`re earning, the lifestyles they`re living. But the life of anybody that`s in the spotlight, it`s hard work.

LIMA: I work usually like 10 to 12 hours a day. Sometimes it`s a pain having to shoot swimsuits on a beach. And it`s like, 105 degrees. Nothing in life is easy, right? As long as you have a goal to achieve. I love my work. I love what I do. So it`s not really difficult to be happy. I do it with pleasure.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER: Adriana was voted overwhelmingly the most desirable woman of the year on Askmen.com.

BRYANT: Well this woman calls herself the queen of all media. And now, she`s adding something else to her resume. Wendy Williams will let us know what it is, that is live next.

HAMMER: And Bill Clinton tells us why he`s the black sheep in President Bush`s family. That`s coming up later in "Laughter Dark."

MICHAEL MICHELLE: I`m Michael Michelle and I`m wearing Donna Karan, Mimi So, and Manolavonic (ph). A girl`s best friend.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

BRYANT: Time for SHOWBIZ sit-down. Tonight, Wendy Williams. She is the self-proclaimed queen of all media, the queen of dish, the shock jock diva. Wendy has got a top rated syndicated radio show, a TV show on VH1, two books, and now she`s even put together some of here favorite artists for her new CD "Wendy Williams Brings the Heat Volume 1." So squeezing me into her busy schedule, she`s joining us live here in New York. Wendy Williams, thank you. And my goodness what a week we`ve had. We have has an acquittal, we have had an engagement. What are your thoughts?

WENDY WILLIAMS, RADIO/TV HOST: Well, the acquittal, the justice system worked. Did you see the way that this case was playing out? They really didn`t have enough to convict Michael. So they had to let him go. And I was just reading today that they`ll be giving him back his passport and he`ll be free to move out of the country and go on with his life. And that`s fine for him. You know. Shame on the prosecution for not --

BRYANT: So you think he was guilty?

WILLIAMS: Well, will you forever be looking at Michael with the O.J. eye? I`m embarrassed to say that, I hate to say that. I think when you`re black you are expected to stick through thick and thin with your people. But that`s a lie too. Because there are plenty of people, black, white, old, young who -- yes, sure, we grew up with Michael`s music. And it hurts us to our heart. And we all know that Michael could not have survived jail.

And also, we all know that jail does not rehabilitate the way perhaps Michael might need help. But they had to let him go. It was a poorly tried case. They proved nothing. But in my heart of hearts, I`m finished with Michael.

BRYANT: Well something just getting started is a new relationship with Tom and Katie. OK, now that starts to tell me where you`re going with this one. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, it has been a whirlwind romance, they`re engaged now what do you think of that?

WILLIAMS: I could see it happening around Mother`s Day when it was being reported that Tom, Katie, Conner and Isabella, the two Cruise children, went to -- the four of them went to I think Mexico for Mother`s Day weekend. And Nicole was left home for Mother`s Day weekend by herself. And what kind of cruelty is that? And it was being is said that Nicole was allegedly not very happy.

BRYANT: But do you think their relationship is real or do you think it`s a publicity stunt?

WILLIAMS: I think it`s a total publicity stunt. They were only together for about two seconds before that Mother`s Day thing. They were looking like family in Cancun. And now all of a sudden they`ve engaged? Did you see that Oprah? Did you see the "Late Night" with Katie?

BRYANT: Yes. I want to move on to something that will make you smile here. You seem a little tense. Hip-hop seems to be taking over the world. You look at the top of the charts, all the songs, nearly all them, hip-hop, hip-hop, hip-hop. What is your take on the fact that suburban kids now -- I mean it really has touched all levels of culture in America.

WILLIAMS: Right. Well, you know, hip-hop is the culture. Rap is the music. I think the music is taking over. Hip-hop as a culture, you know, that`s something else. Why is it taking over? Because it`s something different. Because since the beginning of time, most things urban have been taken, remixed, by white America and put out there to the masses.

BRYANT: But now you`ve put your own record out.

WILLIAMS: Yes. Nice transition, yes, on June 28th, I do have a CD that`s coming out. It is called "Wendy Williams Brings the Heat, Volume 1" it`s on Virgin Records. I`m executive producer along with question mark entertainment.

BRYANT: It`s collaboration, it is a compilation too?

WILLIAMS: You know the thing about compilation CDs, which I adore even before I got my deal, is that it`s not just one voice that you`re hearing throughout. There are very few artists out now that I want to hear 15 tracks of that same voice. A few exceptions to the rule. Mariah Carey.

BRYANT: So we will pick up the heat. Right, and Mimi`s record is doing very well. But we`ll pick up the heat and we will get a sample.

WILLIAMS: And this is what you`re going to hear. You`re going to hear me, the beginning, the middle, and the end just saying hello, thank you, yadda yadda.

BRYANT: Then the artists. We have to wrap it up I`m sorry to say. You were just getting rolling. But luckily you`ve got your own shows and stuff where you can keep talking about it. Thank for joining us.

WILLIAMS: Actually thank you.

BRYANT: ON SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, the CD "Wendy Williams Brings the Heat, Volume 1," comes out June 28th.

HAMMER: I hope the CD works out, but if it doesn`t you can just cash in some of those jewels. It is time now to get your laugh on in "Laughter Dark" as we do every night as we bring you the late night laughs you might have missed.

Former President Bill Clinton was on the "Late Show" and talked about his new relationship with the current president`s family. Clinton told Letterman about an event in Houston where he was speaking to a roomful of Republicans with President Bush`s mother, Barbara.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BILL CLINTON, FORMER PRESIDENT: Mrs. Bush introduced us. And she said that she had taken to calling me son. And I told the Republicans in the audience not to worry; every family has one, the black sheep. And I said, you know --

I said, this just shows you the lengths to which the Bush`s would go to get another president in the family. And I wish I could get them to adopt Hillary.

(END VIDEO CLIP)
