CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Eye on the Sky: Travelocity.com Air Travel Delays

Aired January 28, 2004 - 06:42   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's check in with our 'Eye on the Sky,' Air Traffic Expert Rally Caparas from Travelocity Business is here.
On the word on flight delays, it looks like I wouldn't want to be taking to the skies today.

RALLY CAPARAS, AIR TRAFFIC SPECIALIST, TRAVELOCITY.COM: Well I'm taking to the skies later, as I told you this during the break, I'm going to Dallas. And fortunately, there won't be any delays there.

Now in the northeast, you see the weather, but surprisingly you can expect delay-free schedules for most of the airports in the northeast to start the day. Well during the overnight period, they took the time to clear the runways. They've stayed ahead of the game. They cancelled a couple of hundred flights into -- oops, excuse me, my mike is not working, evidently. And thank you -- Carol.

LIN: I share.

CAPARAS: And the volume is not going to be nearly as heavy. The main factor that's going to influence delays later is going to be the strong gusting winds. Let's talk about it. Excuse me.

Newark and LaGuardia, you are delay free this morning and it will stay that way probably until the early afternoon hours. You'll start to see 45 to 60-minute arrival delays. The snow won't be so much a factor as the wind will be. Runway configuration problems there, so expect moderate delays into the major New York City airports.

Philadelphia and the D.C. Metros further south, only 30 to 45- minute arrival delays later on today once the wind really starts to fire up. About 35-knot winds are expected, so keep your seatbelts fastened, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh in the Great Lakes region, just like they have seen for most of the -- well, here I am. OK, a little technical difficulty here, folks. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Detroit, expect 45-minute arrival and departure delays. Some de-icing problems, some snow and some strong gusting winds there.

Chicago O'Hare Airport, they will see delay-free conditions until later on when the volume and the wind combine for 45-minute arrival delays.

And then on the West Coast, San Francisco International, their typical marine layer fog, low clouds until about noon Pacific Time. You can expect about a 45-minute arrival delay. The rest of the country looking pretty good.

I hope the rest of my day goes better than this. I'm flying into Dallas, as I said.

LIN: Yes. You can keep my microphone.

CAPARAS: Why thank you so much. I better give it back to you, huh?

LIN: It really feels like cable. No, I got my own.

CAPARAS: Thanks.

LIN: Thanks much, Rally, you have a great day and fly safely.

CAPARAS: I should (ph).
