CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

'International News Desk'

Aired January 14, 2004 - 05:34   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the violence just doesn't end between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
Our senior international editor, David Clinch, is with us now with more on this morning's suicide bombing.

DAVID CLINCH, CNN INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: Yes, Carol, suicide bombings in Iraq, suicide bombings also in Israel, at the Erez crossing between Israel and Gaza today. A female suicide bomber used by Hamas apparently for the first time. Hamas, a group which had been involved in these negotiations recently, very behind-the-scenes negotiations, but negotiations on whether or not there would be a cease-fire of some kind by militant groups against Israel.

But all of this time, the cease-fire, the idea of the militants of what a cease-fire is would be that they would not attack civilians. At no point where they suggesting that they would stop attacks or attacking Israeli military. Clearly, that was the case today. At least four Israelis killed at the Erez checking point, checkpoint between Israel and Gaza.

And Hamas following that up with a statement that this would lead and is a sign of an increase in attacks they plan to carry out against Israel.

All of this happening, of course, while there's practically no progress on the peace front. So we're watching that during the day today.

Elsewhere, space, you've been reporting, of course, President Bush to announce this new space initiative for the United States, putting Americans back, perhaps, on the moon, maybe even Mars in the long-term.

We're going to take a look around the world at what China, Russia and others are doing. Coincidentally, a top U.S. military chief, General Myers, was in China today and got a quick look inside. This is pictures from him earlier in the day meeting with Chinese officials. But later in the day he got a quick look inside the Chinese space mission control.

Of course, China and what China is doing in space, they put a man in space last year and they plan to put a man on the moon. They also say the long-term vision of space perhaps being a battleground or at least a military face-off situation is definitely an issue in terms of the U.S. military's view of what the U.S. should be doing in space.

So that's an issue we'll look at during the day today.

And elsewhere, just an interesting story is saw earlier in the week and we're looking at today, a top Catholic cardinal going against Vatican policy and saying that condoms would be OK for use in the isolated incidents of preventing AIDS. But even him saying that -- and this is a man, a Belgian cardinal who has been seen as a possible next pope...

COSTELLO: Wow.

CLINCH: That's caused a bit of a stir in the Vatican.

And then on the less serious side, talking about birth control or lack of it, we've got the story of Julio Inglesias, not Julio Inglesias the singer, not Enrique, his son, but Julio Inglesias' father, Julio Inglesias, Sr.

COSTELLO: There he is.

CLINCH: That's in his -- he's 87 now.

COSTELLO: He's 87?

CLINCH: And reports in the Spanish magazine -- these are pictures of him and his 29-year-old American wife. He is about to become a father at the age of 87. Baby due in April. The baby will be Enrique Inglesias' uncle.

COSTELLO: Oh, that's just too strange.

CLINCH: Does that make sense? It will be Julio Inglesias' brother. So we will watch in April for pictures of the baby. Hopefully it won't be a boy and they won't call him Julio, but that's an interesting story.

COSTELLO: So when the kid's three, his dad will be 90.

CLINCH: I'm not even going to think about that. But, nevertheless, a beautiful wife, hopefully a beautiful child. It'll be a story we'll get back to in April.

COSTELLO: Thank you, David.

CLINCH: All right.
