CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

A Tour of the Christmas Creations

Aired December 22, 2003 - 05:57   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: The lure in London is the window dressing during this important holiday shopping time.
And our Jim Boulden gives us a tour of the Christmas creations.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JIM BOULDEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It wouldn't be a London Christmas without the city's bold store window displays. Each year, London's top fashion clothiers try to grab our attention, get us to stop, and, they hope, lure us through the door. It works.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You can't have a sort of amazing shop with a crap window display. It's, for the passersby, it's the first thing that obviously they see. So it's got to be enticing, it's got to be welcoming and all my favorite shops have brilliant window displays.

BOULDEN: But don't tell London's top window dressers that they are competing with each other. Some try to sell goods in the window. Others just want to evoke some Christmas fun.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The main aim is not just to sell a product. It is to sell Havnikwa's (ph) image and we will choose for the windows the most spectacular pieces for people to see that and enjoy looking at them. Then they come in and they might just buy a lipstick off us or something from the food market.

BOULDEN: Hermes will try to incorporate as much of its product in the windows. But you won't see any manikins.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So any person passing by the window has to be interested in what they see. And the best way is to tell a story, a true story, a nice story, and a charming story for Christmas.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You know, a slipper is a slipper, but those are Hermes slippers and those are rather delicious.

BOULDEN: Rebecca Lowe (ph) designed Hermes' windows. She wanted to evoke Santa without showing Santa. And she was able to pack in more Hermes products than she usually does.

REBECCA LOWE: With this one in particular, I felt as though it could take it, because we have the sleigh. And also we have that image in our heads of Santa Claus on the sleigh being pulled by the reindeer, that it's packed full of goodies for Christmas Day.

BOULDEN: The displays usually show off lavish clothes, expensive fabrics and fancy foot wear. But those dressing the windows don't have the budget to match what's on display.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think people think that we spend a fortune on our windows. We do obviously spend money. But a lot of what we do is done in-house. Most of our windows this year are of very cheap materials, which we managed to source ourselves from different suppliers.

BOULDEN: Soon, the windows will be taken down, the temporary art and design lost forever. Then the January sales signs will be everywhere. But the designers say they are already thinking about what will catch our eye for Christmas 2004.
