CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

U.S. Forces Conduct More Than 50 Raids in Iraq

Aired December 11, 2003 - 06:01   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We have new pictures to show you of a damaged American helicopter. It went down near Mosul, but we're not sure why yet. And we have word of a raid that's netted a weapons candy store.
Let's head live to Baghdad for more with Jane Arraf.

Hello -- Jane.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Hi, Carol.

Well, the only thing we know for sure about that helicopter is it landed with a fire on board. Now, initial reports from the military said it was not hit by ground fire. Ground fire wasn't even suspected. But there are conflicting reports on that one.

But the U.S. military is billing what it calls a major success. In 50 raids in the north and center of Iraq overnight, they say they netted dozens of former Fedayeen, Saddam's fighters, including, they believe, people suspected of ambushing Spanish intelligence officers.

Now, that ambush two weeks ago killed seven of those officers with rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire south of Baghdad. The 82nd Airborne says they believe they've cracked that cell, getting the cell leader and those suspected of carrying out the attack.

But here in Baghdad, Carol, people are focusing on something much more mundane. The city has been essentially dark for two days. Officials say it's a major electrical problem with one of the main power lines they're trying to fix, but it means that people have not had electricity or water for a couple of days in many of these neighborhoods -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Jane Arraf reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
