CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

International News Desk

Aired December 9, 2003 - 05:35   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We want to talk more about the violence in Iraq and also China and Ozzy Osbourne.
Our senior international editor, David Clinch, joins us now to talk about all of those topics.

DAVID CLINCH, CNN INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: Yes, Carol...

COSTELLO: You want to start with Iraq?

CLINCH: It's a busy day for us today. We've got these attacks. Now, there are two attacks on U.S. bases we're talking about in Iraq, a car bomb attack on the base near Mosul and then another attack we're hearing about near Bakava (ph), not too far away north of Baghdad, as well, where an individual apparently walked up to a U.S. base there feigning illness of some kind. The U.S. refused to give him aid. He then blew himself up, injuring at least two U.S. soldiers there.

Not at exactly the same time, but, again, the sort of atmosphere of coordination. And, again, we have to be careful there. We don't know how coordinated these things are, but they often appear to be. So waiting for details on those attacks and, of course, the status of those U.S. troops. At least 30, maybe even 40, injured up in Mosul. So we'll be watching for that.

COSTELLO: And that time this bomb went off right at the -- at a military base's entrance.

CLINCH: At the entrance. But, again, the U.S. military following procedures, according to the spokesman, not allowing the car to enter the base, obviously, and standing back from it. But obviously we're hearing a fairly large explosion if it was still capable of injuring 30, 40 U.S. soldiers who do -- were not allowing it to enter the base. So we're waiting for pictures and details from Mosul.

There is some good news on Iraq, though. In Washington today, the Iraqi Symphony, which has reformed itself in Baghdad with the help of the U.S. administration there, will be playing at the Kennedy Center in Washington later today. We'll get some pictures of that later in the day.

COSTELLO: That is so nice. They're going to be playing with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

CLINCH: That's right. They've been getting a lot of help and donations from music sympathizers here in the U.S. Now, the other big story internationally will be the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, meeting with President Bush today. Lots of issues -- Taiwan, the value of the Chinese currency, all of those things. But North Korea, again, the sort of thorn in the side.

North Korea making some noises, as they almost always do when the U.S. is talking about North Korea, trying to sort of put themselves on the agenda, saying, according to the news agency in Pyongyang today, that they would be prepared to halt their nuclear weapons program in return for the U.S. taking them off the supporters of terrorism list.

Well, it sounds pretty simple, but while the U.S. says it doesn't have proof that they're building nuclear weapons, they say they've got fairly significant proof that they've been helping terrorist groups over the years.

COSTELLO: And they also want the United States to lift all the sanctions.

CLINCH: They do. And there's this sort of simultaneous versus sequential, the North Koreans want everything to happen all at the same time so nobody can be said to have made the first move. The U.S. wants a sequence and they want the North Koreans to make the first move. So we'll be watching closely there. The Chinese premier meeting with President Bush in Washington today.

And then Ozzy Osbourne, we're keeping an eye on this, apparently not too serious, but he was driving an all terrain vehicle -- we're not exactly sure what kind -- but on one of his properties in England yesterday and was injured fairly seriously, but luckily was able to get to a hospital. Immediate treatment has apparently been able to solve the main problem, which was the flow of blood to one of his arms. And he's said to be in this hospital in England today in stable and comfortable position today.

COSTELLO: I don't know how comfortable he could be, because he broke his collar bone, too, and some ribs.

CLINCH: Well, he did. But he's heavily sedated, legally heavily sedated in England today.

COSTELLO: Oh, David.

CLINCH: We're sending a reporter down there. We hope to get Diana Muriel up live from outside the hospital again today.

But, again, latest information, stable and comfortable.

COSTELLO: Well, we're glad.

We wish him the best.

Thank you, David.

CLINCH: All right.

COSTELLO: We appreciate it.
