CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Turducken Tuckin': Not Your Father's Bird

Aired November 27, 2003 - 06:53   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It starts off like a joke, they took a turkey, a duck and a chicken and they cooked them all together and then held a turducken eating contest. Turducken eating contest.
Where else would you find this story but in New York. And who else would bring it to you but Jeanne Moos.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Does this look like Thanksgiving dinner at your house?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If you can stomach Michael Jackson's mug shot, you can stomach competitive eating.

MOOS: What they are eating is enough to make a turkey trot.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Cookie jar (ph), this is going turducken, for turducken with this woman.

MOOS: Turducken: turkey, duck and chicken.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: At first I thought that they had a turkey have sex with a chicken.

MOOS: The butchers at Le Bells (ph) set us straight.

(on camera): So it's basically a deboned ...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sorry.

MOOS: Did you slop this thing around?

(voice-over): Take a turkey, a duck and a chicken and debone them. Then put the chicken and the duck into the turkey, along with stuffing, sew it up, then wallah (ph), turducken.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Ain't she a beaut?

MOOS: We tasted the turducken back at the contest.

(on camera): That's good.

(voice-over): But competitors said it was a bit dry for speed eating.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She is compacting the food in her stomach and getting rid of that burp. Ladies and gentlemen, she is in its own (ph).

MOOS: Each plate contained a pound of food.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You are looking at the three horsemen of the esophagus here.

MOOS: Whoever eats the most in 12 minutes wins.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sonja Thomas (ph).

MOOS: Wearing a mere 100 pounds, this former manager of a Burger King beat the big boys. She ate this much food, 7.75 pounds.

(on camera): Where is all that turducken right now? Can we see? Can we see?

(voice-over): Last year's winner isn't giving turducken a bad rap.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Turducken for Thanksgiving, it's your best bet, ooha (ph).

MOOS: Why talk mere turkey when you can talk turducken, or as its namesakes call it, gobble, quack, cluck.

Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
