CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Microsoft to Create Song-Downloading Service

Aired November 17, 2003 - 06:18   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Time now, though, for a little 'Business Buzz.' Move over Napster, Microsoft wants to sell music on the Web.
Carrie Lee has more for you live from the Nasdaq market site.

It's interesting.

CARRIE LEE, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: It really is, Carol. Just the latest company to get into the online music selling space.

Microsoft now confirming to "The Wall Street Journal" that it does have plans to roll out an online music service sometime in 2004. They won't give more details. They are not saying much beyond that. But "The Journal" goes on to report that Microsoft has been in close contact with major music companies to discuss plans for a service. "The Journal" also says a job listing posted on the Microsoft corporate Web site last week actually advertised an opening for a senior level marketing position for the service.

Now of course Apple's iTunes and Napster have been revamped and Apple iTunes came out sometime in the spring. Also Wal-Mart last week, we're getting some more detail -- reported detail on Wal-Mart's plans to do the same. So all of this competition, Carol, typically means good things for consumers. Because when there's a lot of competition in the space, that means prices will see some competitiveness as well. So expect to see this from Microsoft sometime in 2004.

COSTELLO: Yes, and can you see a day where there will be no more record stores?

LEE: Yes, it's almost hard to find a store that actually sells vinyl now. It's sort of a relic type of thing, but they are just still out there.

COSTELLO: I didn't mean vinyl. I didn't mean vinyl. I still call them record stores, but I meant those stores that sell those CD things.

LEE: Well CDs will be a thing of the past, too, one of these days, I'm sure.

COSTELLO: All right. Thank you. Carrie Lee reporting live from the Nasdaq market site.
