CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Governor-Elect Schwarzenegger Seeks Help From Washington

Aired October 30, 2003 - 06:06   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: California's Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing what he can in Washington. He's asking for money to help in fighting those fires.
Live to D.C. and Jennifer Coggiola.

Is he meeting with success there, Jennifer?

JENNIFER COGGIOLA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: A little bit, yes. Good morning, Carol.

He arrived yesterday for the first time in D.C. since his October 7 recall victory, and he arrived with much ado -- certainly, a large entourage. But like you said, he was here to get federal aid for his state, and also to get some one-on-one time with members of both parties.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

COGGIOLA (voice-over): The red carpet was rolled out on Capitol Hill Wednesday, and it wasn't for just any politician.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How much will you be asking for today, sir?

COGGIOLA: California's Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger in a unique meet-and-greet opportunity.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER (R), CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR-ELECT: I came basically to Washington to establish relationships and to make sure that we are getting more federal money to California as I promised in my campaign.

COGGIOLA: But his agenda took a somber turn this week.

SCHWARZENEGGER: But, of course, the recent events, the huge disastrous fires have changed my mission a little bit, that I'm now more looking for federal money for the people, for the victims of the fire.

COGGIOLA: In this first trip to D.C. as governor-elect, Schwarzenegger got face time with both Republicans and Democrats.

SCHWARZENEGGER: Thank you very much to Senator Kennedy and my favorite uncle-in-law.

COGGIOLA: But why all the attention?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (UNINTELLIGLBLE) celebrity. They have a little bit of celebrity envy, so they want to be associated with him.

COGGIOLA: His star power, both benefiting his ego perhaps and perhaps putting his state in line for more federal money.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Congress is not going to open up its wallet just because of Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it gives him access.

COGGIOLA: Access his state could be depending on in the upcoming year.

SCHWARZENEGGER: I didn't want to say exactly the line, "I'll be back," but, I mean, I will be back many more times, believe me.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COGGIOLA: Now, the governor-elect's first stop yesterday was with members of FEMA, and on the advice from Governor Gray Davis, he asked for one-stop disaster relief centers to be set up immediately for fire victims, and he said that they should be established by this weekend -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Jennifer Coggiola reporting live from D.C. this morning.
