Kobe Bryant Case Hearing Today

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Complete with a new tattoo of his wife on his arm, Kobe Bryant will be in Colorado today. As for what he'll say, well, that remains unclear. There is supposed to be a preliminary hearing this afternoon, but Bryant's attorneys could wave it.
Gary Tuchman is in Eagle County, Colorado.

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Today is the day that evidence in the Kobe Bryant case will be revealed publicly for the first time -- maybe. And we say maybe, because Kobe Bryant's attorneys could cancel this preliminary hearing. They have that right, and they could do it at the very last minute.
Bryant had been in Hawaii since Friday for the Lakers training camp. He flew from Hawaii to Colorado for this hearing. He will have to be here either way for a short bond hearing if indeed his attorneys decide to cancel the preliminary hearing.
Now, why might they do that? His attorneys might do that because much information will be disseminated publicly, and it could prove to be embarrassing to Kobe Bryant. Normally, you have this hearing because a judge has to decide if there is probable cause to bind this case to trial. If a defense attorney feels there is not probable cause, this is a very valuable hearing.
Kobe Bryant's attorneys will ask the judge today to close this hearing or most of the hearing to the press. Also, asked before, for the accuser to be here in person, so they could cross-examine here. The judge ruled against having the accuser here. The judge will make the decision before the hearing starts today if the hearing should be closed to the press or parts of it should be closed to the press, and then Kobe Bryant's attorneys will make the decision of whether or not to attend this preliminary hearing.
There will be elaborate security here. There have been threats against the prosecutor in the case, the judge, and two serious threats against the accuser. So, armed sheriff's deputies will be behind the courthouse behind me and in front to provide security for the courtroom.
