Armed Man Holds Students Hostage in Tennessee College

Aired September 17, 2003 - 15:54   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Bringing you up to date on some breaking news we're watching. Northwestern Tennessee is the location, Dyersburg, Tennessee to be specific, about 80 miles north of Memphis.
Ongoing hostage situation there. Located at the Dyersburg State Community College. We're told a man with a firearm and perhaps a knife, according to some reports, has taken control of a classroom in the administration building. The top floor of the Eller Administration Building there at Dyersburg State Community College. There are 18 students on the roll there, but there are reports on the Associated Press that as many as 22 people might be in the room.

Happened at about 12:30 p.m. local time. That's 1:30 Eastern is when this thing started unfolding. Now we've spoken to a couple of people on the scene. And what they tell us is that there is no indication that the authorities have established any communication with the hostage-taker. And no indication as to what his demands might be.

We do know that this particular hostage-taker is not a member of the faculty. Unclear right now if in fact that person is from off the campus, we're tracking this. Obviously unfolding as we speak. Stay with CNN and we'll keep you up to date on it.
