CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

UAW Makes Tentative Contract With Chrysler

Aired September 15, 2003 - 06:15   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Time now, though, for a little business buzz. The United Auto Workers Union made a deal last night with only one of the big three automakers in Detroit.
Let's get the latest word from Carrie Lee live at the Nasdaq site in New York.

Welcome back -- Carrie.

CARRIE LEE, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Thank you very much, Carol.

Well, a lot happening with big labor in the auto sector over the weekend. It was expected that the United Auto Workers Union president, Ron Gettelfinger, would announce new four-year labor contracts with all of the big three automakers last night in Detroit. However, that did not happen. The deadline for new contracts was midnight and just one agreement was made, this, with the Chrysler division of DaimlerChrysler.

Now a news conference was set to start at about 10:30 Central Time last night, didn't actually get started until very close to that deadline hour. And then when midnight hit, just one car company was signed on to this deal.

Pretty much a surprise here because company and union officials had been saying for weeks that an agreement would be made to demonstrate their new level of cooperation. Not exactly sure (INAUDIBLE) issue could be healthcare. That's been a sticking point for a lot of companies. Meanwhile, those two had to extend their contracts on a provisional basis until agreements have been made.

So, Carol, these stocks did rise a little bit last week, but we'll certainly be watching these names today to see what any stock fallout or impact may be. Ford and GM not completely out of the running, but as I said, the Chrysler unit, the only one to sign with the UAW as it stands right now.

COSTELLO: Tell us what else we should look at later today.

LEE: Well I have to say overall stocks look set to open higher, so we could see a good week. Of course last week the Dow, the S&P, the Nasdaq slipped for the first time on a weekly basis in over a month. You can see each index down just fractionally.

In terms of economic news, we'll get a reading on industrial production as well as business inventories both coming out before the opening bell and that could influence trading this Monday morning -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right. Carrie Lee, live at the Nasdaq market site, many thanks.
