CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

MTV to Launch 2-Issue Trial for New Magazine

Aired August 25, 2003 - 06:47   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Time now for some more business buzz. After creating a TV channel that influenced a whole generation, MTV wants to create some buzz in the publishing world.
Carrie Lee live at the Nasdaq market site with details for us.

Good morning -- Carrie.

CARRIE LEE, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

MTV wants people to read it first. The music channel is reportedly going to launch a two-issue trial run of a new magazine called "MTV Magazine." Now the first issue is going to come out in late October. The theme is going to be 'Spanking New Music.' And that's going to coincide with 'Spanking New Music Week' on the channel. The magazine is also going to feature things like reviews of trends and DVDs, movies, technology and games, as well as a CD-ROM with video extras.

Now the second issue is planned for December. They haven't made specific plans beyond that, but the magazine will cost $5.99.

And by the way, MTV is owned by Viacom, which also owns Nickelodeon, and that's another channel that publishes a magazine. So a new venture, Carol, for MTV, but not entirely uncharted territory for Viacom, MTV's parent company.

Back to you.

COSTELLO: So funny, because MTV rarely plays music anymore on its television station.

LEE: You know it's all about connectivity here, cross marketing potential. So late October, we'll see what the thing looks like.

COSTELLO: That's right, synergy.

Carrie Lee, live out of New York, thank you.
