CNN SATURDAY MORNING NEWS

Flooding in Kentucky

Aired August 23, 2003 - 07:36   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JOHN VAUSE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Search teams continued to look overnight for a woman lost during a flash flood in Kentucky. Her 6- year-old daughter is also missing. The two were lost when their house was uprooted and sent downstream. The woman's young son was killed in the house collapse. Most of the search crews were forced to suspend the operation at nightfall, but rescue dog crews continued well past midnight.
Well, the flooding in Kentucky caught everyone by surprise.

We get more now from Molly Grantham of CNN affiliate WLEX.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ILEC JONES: This was my patio furniture.

MOLLY GRANTHAM, WLEX CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Ilec Jones (ph) is trying to get into his house. Wicker furniture has floated around the room, landing directly in front of the door. Once inside, the image is grim. A mud soaked kitchen table, a refrigerator on its side, a line just a foot from the ceiling indicating how high flood waters stood. Ilec claims it reached eight foot.

JONES: My wife and grandchild was here, grandson, and wasn't here when it was eight foot, but was here, got here about when it was down to about four. And we went across and got them out.

GRANTHAM: Got them out by trudging through waist high flash floods. He save his family, lost everything else. Even his minivan traveled 50 yards down the road.

(on camera): What are you going to do now?

JONES: I can't answer that. I don't know. I've lost everything.

GRANTHAM: Many others on Ilec's street can relate. Just take a look around Bald Knob Road -- muddy guardrails, lights of people still trying to fix power.

(voice-over): A shelter has been set up closer to downtown Frankfurt, but it's not very populated. Most flood victims are staying with other family and friends.
