CNN BREAKING NEWS

TSA Stops All Passengers Leaving New York, Cleveland Airports

Aired August 14, 2003 - 17:36   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JOHN KING, CNN ANCHOR: Obviously a major power outage means major problems for the transportation industry. Trying to track that and other angles of the story are Patty Davis -- Patty.
PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, John, the Transportation Security Administration tells us that it has actually stopped screening passengers at the three New York airports, New York, Laguardia, Newark, and JFK, as well as Cleveland Hopkins. And you can understan why, you need electricity to run those screening machines that you run your bags through that you get through to the gates.. They are not going to take any chances and go ahead and put people on planes in this situation.

So obviously some major inconveniences as flights are being delayed because people cannot be screened at these airports. Now the flights though, we are told by the Transporation Security Administration, that do have passengers at the gate, are being allowed to take off at those airports, according to TSA.

Now, the FAA has ordered ground stops at those affected airports. Ground stops, we understand, are in Toronto, too. Now that means the flights coming into those airports are being -- basically not being allowed to come in because they can't handle bringing those passengers in at this point. The FAA says that ground stop, at this point, will continue until around 6:00 p.m.

The FAA is stressing here that this is not a safety issue. Air traffic control continues to operate on backup generators. It is completely safe. It is handling the traffic that is in the air right now and on the ground right now. And the electricity outages not a problem on that regard -- John.

KING: Patty Davis keeping track of that development.
