CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Introducing the Squeegee Girl

Aired July 31, 2003 - 05:52   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: You know, the ride to and from work can be really rough. In New York City, though, drivers stuck in traffic get to see a young woman in a bikini top and very short shorts coming at 'em with a squeegee.
CNN's Jeanne Moos introduces us to the squeegee girl.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Squeegee guys used to be the scourge of New York. And now that the city has more or less banished them, what should appear?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my god.

KATHRYN WILLIAMSON, PERFORMANCE ARTIST: Hey, how are you? Oh, it's too big. How am I going to get up there?

MOOS: Male motorists seem eager for a better view. And we don't mean the view through a cleaner windshield.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She can be my squeegee girl.

WILLIAMSON: It's a beautiful day, isn't it?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, you bet.

MOOS: Talk about reverse discrimination.

(on camera): Do you usually let guys squeegee your windows or not?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, no guy does my windows.

MOOS: How come her?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because she's gorgeous.

MOOS (voice-over): And when they ask why she's out in a skimpy outfit squeegeeing...

WILLIAMSON: Art project/entrepreneurial experiment.

MOOS (on camera): Was it an art project first or was it to make money first?

KATHRYN WILLIAMSON, PERFORMANCE ARTIST: It was, it's kind of both. For the first time ever I'm actually making money from my art.

MOOS (voice-over): Not surprising once you see Kathryn Williamson's past performance art. For instance, putting on jeans that are way too small then asking the audience to help. Someone finally produced pliers and broke the zipper. Another time, she put on a blonde wig and posed as a prostitute as art gallery goers watched from a window. The prostitute performance was good practice for her squeegee role.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK, this is for you, honey. Give me a kiss. You've got to give me a kiss.

MOOS: No kisses. One of Kathryn's friends says squeegee girl is like that scene where a chain gang is mesmerized by a woman washing a car in "Cool Hand Luke."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "COOL HAND LUKE")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, boy, she knows exactly what she's doing.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS (on camera): So have we learned anything from this experience?

WILLIAMSON: We've learned what sells, haven't we?

MOOS (voice-over): Sure, she gets rejected.

WILLIAMSON: Oh.

MOOS: But her success rate is high.

WILLIAMSON: Good.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What am I supposed to do, tip you now?

WILLIAMSON: Well, it's always nice.

MOOS: Even women are open to Kathryn's polite approach.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Men, I lock the doors.

Good luck.

MOOS: Her luck held when the police pulled over.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: An art project?

WILLIAMSON: Yes, I mean this is my art.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Are you getting donations?

WILLIAMSON: Not generally, no.

MOOS: Well, she's not exactly asking for them. Nevertheless... (on camera): She made a hundred bucks the other day.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Let me start.

MOOS (voice-over): When it comes to squeegeeing, she may be the main squeeze, but she'd better watch where she sprays.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That was all over my face.

WILLIAMSON: Oh, sorry.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That's all right.

MOOS: Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
